Maximizing sales at the register

I’ve been working as a gas station cashier for a few years now and I’ve found that upselling can really boost our sales; for example, I always ask customers if they want to add a drink or snack when they come in for gas. Just last week, I made an extra $150 in sales just by suggesting a bottled drink to regulars. What techniques have you guys found effective?

I agree — upselling can really add up! I’ve had success with seasonal items too. Last summer, suggesting ice cream increased my sales during hotter days. Do you find that your regulars are more open to trying new things?

It’s all about timing; I find that asking about snacks right when they’re filling up gets the best response. I also try to match the weather with my suggestions — like a cold drink on hot days. Have you noticed if some customers tend to say yes more than others?

I’ve noticed that even just a friendly reminder about our loyalty program can really encourage customers to add that drink or snack… It drives me nuts when I forget to mention it because that’s where I’ve made the most extra sales! Have you found that works for your regulars too, @robinson8?
